I barely slept election night.

Like many of us here and around the world, I was glued to the TV, anxiously following election results, wondering about the fate of the many causes, policies, people, institutions and values that matter to me. Like so many Hillary supporters, I felt stunned and profoundly unprepared for the outcome. I am a New Yorker and perhaps I had been living in — as one friend put it — a “liberal bubble.” But I was so certain that Hillary would win and so ready the promise of greater diversity, inclusivity, connection, tolerance and equality.

PRESENCE:  A MOTHER'S GIFT

In 1997, at the age of 73, my mother was diagnosed with Alzheimer’s. The diagnosis came after a good seven years of forgetfulness, disorientation, repetitive questions and decreased executive function.

Although we all wanted to believe her symptoms were age-related, my mother had known intuitively for some time that something just wasn't right.  Her diagnosis, therefore, did not surprise her.

As we struggled to understand what this would mean for her and for us, my mother spoke of a silver lining. "I could have been taken suddenly in a freak accident and would never have had an opportunity to say goodbye, to tell you how much you mean to me."

That perspective would inform how she would live her life and help me discover firsthand the exquisite tenderness of a connection that today transcends language and identity.  I also have learned precious lessons about love, patience, perspective and joy.

Here's one of  my favorites.

In the wake of so many tragedies, here and abroad, it can be difficult to celebrate what we have -- when others have so little.  Our sense of helplessness can override feelings of joy and gratitude and even give rise to guilt.

But does it need to?

Brene Brown, Ph.D., LMSW, a social scientist and research professor at the University of Houston Graduate College of Social Work, made an interesting observation about gratitude while researching vulnerability.

"Talk to yourself like you would to someone you love."
                       ~ Brene Brown

Have you ever listened to how you speak to yourself? The number of times you say should, must, need or have to in an hour, let alone a day?

We use these imperatives like little whips, to get us moving.   We think it helps us get stuff done, and, occasionally, it might.

But how does it leave you feeling?  Energized and inspired?

Not so much.

But read on....there's good news . . . .

Remember the song “If you’re happy and you know it clap your hands. . .”?

When I think of it, I immediately flash back to my childhood.  It's 1965.  I'm at a birthday party. There's a chocolate cake with pink buttercream flowers and a tiny, pink ballerina right in the middle. There are balloons, party hats, pin-the-tail-on the donkey and musical chairs.  After a healthy portion of birthday cake and ice cream, I’m all sugared up, ready to crash, and utterly happy.

Sound familiar? Do you remember feeling so utterly happy that in everything felt right with the world?

Have you felt that way lately?
